Press statement:
15 September 2006

Suaram is extremely concerned and disturbed that the whole negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Malaysia and United States has been shrouded in total secrecy without public consultation. The FTA, once signed, will have far reaching impacts and implications on the livelihood of the whole population, especially the economic, social and cultural rights of the people. Experiences in other countries who have signed FTA with the United States have showed serious negative repercussions to their economy and the population, which are reflected in drastic price increase in medicine, destruction of environment, control of economy by multi-national companies etc. It is therefore more alarming when the government that is supposed to represent the people, denied its people the fundamental right to information on the FTA and went into negotiation with the United States without first consulting the public.

"Protection for Domestic Workers!

"International Seminar on Domestic Workers

Tentative Dates: 8-10 November 2006

Head Office, FNV Mondiaal, Amsterdam

"Domestic workers' employment situation is considered not to 'fit' the general framework of existing employment laws. This is because most work done by them is generally invisible, done in houses (not considered as workplaces) of private persons (not considered as employers). So, domestic workers are not normally considered as employees, their work is undervalued, and their working conditions remain, in essence, unregulated. In fact, some countries not only do not consider household helpers as workers and exclude them from protection under their national labour codes, they do not provide them with protection under any other national law. In some countries they are denied the right to organize in trade unions. This of course leaves them vulnerable to abuse."

Fax: (852) 2489 1879, E-mail: [email protected]

8 September 2006

Dear Mr. Lo Chung Wing and Gold Peak shareholders

Compensation for excessive cadmium levels and cadmium poisoning

We understand that on the 13 September Gold Peak Industries will be holding its AGM in Hong Kong. We wish to take this opportunity to address the AGM in order to express our support for the struggle of workers from several of your companys factories in China to gain adequate compensation and redress for excessive cadmium levels and cadmium poisoning contracted while at work for Gold Peak Industrial Holding Ltd (hereafter GP).

We are also writing to express our dismay at the commencement of legal action you have taken against three Hong Kong groups --- Globalisation Monitor, Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and the Neighbourhood and Workers Service Centre ---for their support of the workers effort in making their case heard. We deplore the use of threatening legal action to silence the legitimate support the groups are showing to these workers.
