Leaders of civil society have urged all people to take part in the general strike called by the seven agitating political parties.

A public appeal issued by Dr. Mahesh Maskey and Professor Krishna Khanal o­n behalf of Civil Movement for Democracy and Peace (CMDP) o­n Monday has flayed the government�s attempt to foil the peaceful movement of the people and urged general people to defy the government�s threat and take part in the movement for the restoration of peace and democracy.

At a time when the government is working to foil the valley centered general strike of the seven agitating political parties, three labour unions working in the field of transportation have expressed solidarity to the general strike of seven party alliance.

Issuing a press statement o­n Monday the Nepal Independent Workers Union, Transport Worker�s Union and Nepal Transport Workers Meet expressed commitment to make the general strike slated for April 69 a success despite the warning issued by the government.

A group of Armed Police has raided the houses of CPN (UML) General Secreatary Madhav Kumar Nepal's two brothers at Koteshwar o�n March 23, at around 7:00 am.The adjoining houses of kin brothers of General Secretary Nepal were raided by a group of 50 police persons under the command of APF SP. Houses of Saroj Kumar Upadhaya and Binod Kumar Upadhaya were raided and all the communication gadgets including three computers and five telephones sets were taken away. At least 15 police forcefully entered the houses and searched there for four hours. Nepal's brother duo refused to sign the affidavit.General Secretary Nepal has asked the cadres to sue case against government for this "barbaric act". Meanwhile, Madhav Kumar Nepal has been visited today by therepresentatives of ICRC, NHRC and OHCHR. However, national human rights organizations were not given access. Earlier, security persons had raided the house of UML General Secretary Nepal o�n March 22. They had forcibly taken away the computer, telephone and cordless sets from there.(www.inseconline.org)Meanwhile, Kantipur o�nline reports that the government today returned the communication devices seized from the residence of UML generalsecretary Nepal at Koteshwor, Kathmandu yesterday. Representatives of Sromik Nirapotta Forum (Workers� Safety Forum) a coalition of 14 organisations that seeks to promote industrial safety and protect workers� interests, met with BGMEA leaders yesterday (6 March) in the BGMEA Conference Hall. Dr. Hamida Hossain, Shirin Akhter, Khushi Kabir, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Mashhuda Khatun, Taslimur Rahman, Nur Khan and Tanjib-ul Alam met BGMEA president and his colleagues and raised concerns with the absence of health and safety conditions in garment factories, inadequate accident compensation paid to workers and treatment of workers injured in Spectrum Sweater Industries and KTS Textile and Garment Industries.

The Latest Situation

A total number of 64 workers have been killed by the inferno at KTS Textile in Chittagong o­n 23rd February 2006. Some of the workers have been passing crucial time in Dhaka and Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Family members of 21 amongst 64 killed workers have received compensation from Bangladesh Garments Manufacturer and Exporters Association (BGMEA) till 16thMarch 2006. The amount of compensation provided by the BGMEA per person is Taka o­ne hundred thousand o­nly; 21 thousand of which will have to receive through the court. Moreover, in the mean time, the official investigation committee of the government has been published its report o­n the inferno and has mentioned that there was an welding in the factory o­n 23rd and that caused the fire.
