The freedom of association for workers in Indonesia has once again been violated. PT.Sinar Apparel International has violated ILO Convention Number 87 and ILO Convention Number 98. PT.Sinar Apparel International produces for prominent garment brands such as Marks&Spencer, GAP, John Apparel. The management has retrenched trade union leader, Arifin (a.k.a. Emon). The company reported against him to the police. He has been blamed for taking photos inside the factory. This is a common among workers and there has been no punishment for this act before. It is clear that the company was just searching for some excuse to terminate him.

In Hong Kong, struggle to release the 14 detainees continues. Although they have been bailed out and are in a much better condition now, the HK groups are asking the HK government to drop all the charges and let them go back to their own countries, so that they can spend the new years day with their loved ones and families. So far, showing no sign of dropping charges, the HK police keep repeating that they will be treated according to Hong Kong law.

Committee for Asian Women condemns the Hong Kong police brutality in suppressing the peaceful protest of marchers in Hong Kong on 17th December 2005 at the 6th Ministerial Conference of the WTO. This resulted in the arrest of over 900 people and 100s injured.

CAW strongly believes that WTO brings huge disasters to workers especially women workers, farmers, peasants and populations in developing countries. It has taken away their lives and livelihoods. It has devastated the countryside and has caused peasants and farmers to become bankrupt, workers to lose their jobs, and pollution and destruction of our environment.  It is these actions of the WTO that are most violent and destructive. It is this horror that peoples'
groups from all over the world came to Hong Kong to protest against. Fighting against injustice is the sacred right of the people. They did not come to Hong Kong to be violent.
