PUNE: We have changed over time and our conditions have improved but society refuses to change. People still view us with suspicion and there is little respect for us, said Saru Waghmare, committee member of Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat ( KKPKP) at the Rotary Club Vocational Excellence awards function at the SM Joshi hall on Sunday.

She was speaking about her experiences as a waste-picker after KKPKP was awarded the Rotary Vocational Excellence award. The award, instituted in the memory of late Rotarian Sanjeev Nevgi, was given by Rotary Club of Pune Pashan.

Writer and journalist Arun Sadhu spoke on ‘Today’s Journalism’ and highlighted the increasing neglect of morals and ethics in the contemporary media due to new philosophy of market-driven media.

“There is a moral turbulence today and the media finds itself in the centre of this turbulence. Most professions are also going the same way and media cannot stand away from this bulldozer,” he said. He also highlighted the increasing prevalence of paid news in the media.
Besides KKPKP, Kishor Patil, CEO and Managing Director, KPIT Cummins and associate editor, Sakaal, Parag Karandikar were also awarded.

The Vocational Excellence Award is awarded to an individual who may or may not be a Rotarian. However, the recipient is expected to live and work within District 9710. In addition, the awardee is expected to be aware of Rotary’s involvement in their community.

The Awardee is expected to have demonstrated vocational excellence of the highest order. In doing so, they are expected to have set a clear example to others, particularly the youth of Australia.

For the Awardee, the need to pursue and strive for vocational excellence will be demonstrated through a proven record of dedication to a specific vocation, which is resulting in benefits to the community.
