Fix Minimum Wages: Domestic Workers

Members belonging to the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers’ Welfare Association staged a demonstration near the Collector’s office on Monday January 23.

Their demands included fixation of minimum wages for domestic workers’ based on the price hike (index), to ratify the ILO convention supplemented by the recommendation on decent work for domestic workers, to ensure national legislation for the domestic worker, to include domestic workers under the Sexual Harassment Bill 2010, to ensure justice to the death of a child domestic worker Amudha and to take action on the agents sending children for domestic work to Kerala.

They shouted slogans urging the governments to implement their just demands immediately.

Former state president G. Banumathi presided, while Pitchai from CITU, Nanda Singh of AITUC, Clara coordinator of Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers’ Federation, Sr. George Mary from Virudhunagar district and among others spoke. Similar demonstration was held in Virudhunagar district also, a press note said.
