While workers of a garment sweatshop* based in Gurgaon (India) engage with their employer to get justice,
their families will soon go without food and await eviction from their homes!
110 workers of the Viva Global Factory are sitting at the factory gate, day and night, most of them since the 25th of August 2010. They are seeking justice from the Management of Viva Global, a supplier of apparel to the global superbrand Marks and Spencer. It has been a long haul for these hand to mouth workers who will soon have to pay rent and arrange for food for themselves and their families. They have demonstrated a rare determination to end goondaism and enforcement of labour laws in the Factory.
Generous help from your end can support their struggle. It will also ensure that the nefarious designs of the Management to ‘tire the workers and break their struggle’ does not succeed.
Â
The Viva Global Workers Struggle for Justice Fund (VGWJF) has been established as a collective contingency fund to see the workers through the current difficult phase. It is managed by the workers. The following is the current requirement to ensure that 110 workers and their families can partially meet their basic expenses :-
Rent costs for families of workers @ Rs. 1000/- unit X 110 = Rs. 1,10,000/-
Food costs for families of workers @ Rs. 1500/- unit X 110 = Rs. 1,65,000/-
It is expected that the Fund will be built with the contribution of various supporters. You are welcome to call us at any of the numbers given below and discuss the amount you wish to contribute.
Contributions to the VGWJF can be made either by wire transfer, sending us a cheque or Demand Draft. Please write to Ms. Sandhya at her email: sandhya@sld-india.org or call her on her mobile number : +919871953579 and she will help you sending your contribution across to us. You could directly send us your crossed cheque or DD which should be in favour of ‘Society for Labour and Development’ and payable at New Delhi. Our address is C-23 (First Floor, Rear Side, Hauz Khas, New Delhi – 110016.
(Society for Labour and Development has consented to take funds on behalf of the workers fund. No service charges will be deducted for this. Contributions to the fund are exempt from Income Tax, under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act)
