Protesters gathered outside the Embassy for Saudi Arabia on 30th August, on behalf of L.G Ariyawathie, the Sri Lankan maid who had 23 nails hammered into her body by her Saudi employers.
The protesters called for an end to the torture being faced by Sri Lanka workers in foreign countries and asked that migrant worker rights be enforced.
Ariyawathie, a resident of Batuwita, Kamburupitiya had left her home in March this year for work in Saudi Arabia, but was soon subject to inhuman torture at the hands of her two employers.
As a result of the torture faced by her, Ariyawathie on Friday (27th August) underwent a three-hour long surgery in Matara to remove 23 of the nails that were embedded in her body.
