Press Release: Asian Women Unite to End Unfair Globalization and Fundamentalism

We, the women and women workers representing five countries from Asia – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia- gathered to analyse and confront the main impacts of growing conflict and political suppression in Asia within the context of fundamentalism and its intersection with globalization and militarization. We, the participants of the workshop on “Globalization and rise in Fundamentalism- implications for women and women workers” jointly organized by Karmojibi Nari and the Committee for Asian Women on 22-24 August, 2010 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
- Notes that the growing religious fundamentalism militarization and terrorism in Asia has brutalised and victimized growing numbers of women;
- Condemns the violation of women workers’ rights and freedom as a consequence of unfair neo-liberal domination;
- Decries the use of fundamentalism and neo-liberal agenda to sustain and expand economic, political and military interests, on one hand, and to subdue legitimate protest and silence minorities including women, on the other hand;
- Denounces the use of ethnic, religious and gender violence as state policy to quell demands of freedom, democracy and equality
- Calls for an end to state violence and repression in the pursuit of globalisation and fundamentalism;
- Demands for decent work–livelihood and social security, fair living wages, and the right to freedom of association—equality and dignity for women workers;
- Seeks Protection of all rights of women and their families including the right to mobility and to work with dignity;
We call upon the state to create a gender-equitable policies and practices in work place, ensuring better living standards, . We rise to the challenge of protecting ourselves and our resources against the onslaught of gender based violence, armed conflict, religious extremism. We will unite all forces in Asia to resist unfair globalization and fundamentalism to achieve harmony, peace and a society free of exploitation, repression and violence.
