CAW’s OSH Training for Trainers in Cambodia

Committee for Asian Women organised a two day training of trainers on Occupational Health and Safety for women workers in the manufacturing sector in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 23-24th May 2010 in collaboration with the Cambodian Workers Information Centre and the Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union (C.CAWDU). The training was attended by thirty participants from Thailand and Cambodia representing garment, textile, electronics, automobile and herbal medicine manufacturing industries. This is the second OSH training workshop organized by CAW in order to highlight the need of a gender sensitive and labour rights oriented OSH training programmes. The first training workshop was held in Ayuddhaya in Thailand in February 2010.
The training aimed to increase awareness and enhance knowledge of women workers on issues concerning occupational safety and health, national laws and labour standards related to OSH. It also aimed in building capacity and skills of women workers to be able to further share knowledge and information acquired from the training to women workers, either in formal setting through union based or factory based training or in informal training at workplace such as peer education and small group discussions.
The training covered key Occupational Safety and Health topics including: reproductive health for women workers in the manufactory sactor, violence against women and sexual harassment in the workplace, body mapping and factory mapping, the role of the health and safety representative in creating a safe and healthy workplace, finding solutions to protect workers from the repeated problems at workplace, and industry development and the protection of health and safety at work.
