25-27 August 2009

Jakarta, Indonesia

Organised by Jala PRT and CAW

More than 50 domestic workers groups and supporters from 10 districts gathered in Bogor, Indonesia to participate in a national training on advocacy organized by JALA PRT (National Network of Domestic Workers Advocacy) and supported by CAW. Representatives of the Asian Domestic Workers Network (ADWN) from Nepal, Hong kong and India attended the event to share their perspectives. Migrant domestic worker support group CARAM-Asia also attended the training with one of their members, to provide migrant domestic workers perspectives.

The training aimed to increase the capacity of Indonesian domestic workers groups and their supporters to campaign and promote domestic workers’ rights and welfare. Sharing of local strategies and approaches, intersected with learnings from regional and international experiences. The training focused on the draft legislation for domestic workers, policy reform, domestic workers organising and the campaign seeking an ILO Convention on Domestic Work by 2011.

Ms. Sulistri from one of the main trade unions, KSBSI and Mr. Bonasahat from the ILO office, gave presentations on the trade union perspectives on “domestic workers as workers”, and the ILO Convention process respectively.

The participants came out with district and national level organizing and advocacy plans for implementation in the next months. Shortly after the training participants held a public action in the Jakarta center, which was covered by media.
