Over 3,000 workers of Tonghua Iron and Steel Group, a large scale state-owned company in Jilin Province, protested against privitisation on 24 July 2009. Jianlong Steel Holding Company, already holding a small share of Tonghua, planned to take over more than 50% share by the end of the year. The manager, Chen said that the workforce of 30,000 employees would be cut to 5,000 after the privitisation. He was then beaten to death by the angry workers in a dispute. The government announced later to the workers and their families through the local television channel that it had denied Jianlong’s taken over of the steel firm Tonghua.
